Visiting Queenstown
Activities & Dining Options

Queenstown is the main tourist destination in the South Island and dubs itself as the Adventure Capital. We would recommend spending the bulk of the time in Queenstown, as there is plenty to do. A lot of the activities are not suitable for young children, although there are things for young children to do. The Shotover Jet does allow younger kids. On wet weather days with kids there is a good indoor mini golf center on the road up to the Skyline gondola.

Many of the family-friendly restaurants do not take reservations for small bookings, and waiting time can be 60-90 minutes for a table during peak season.

A couple of the formal dining places such as The Bunker and Rata do take reservations and we’d highly recommend booking them in advance if you’re planning to check them out.

Fergburger is famous in Queenstown but the waiting time can be up to 90 minutes during peak periods. Try to go between breakfast and lunch time, or early afternoon to try and beat the crowd.
The Cow is a great place for hearty pasta and pizzas.

Vudu Café is a good option for breakfast or brunch.

A visit to Arrowtown is an option when staying in Queenstown, it is only about a 20-minute drive. This is an old gold mining town. Walk along the main street and a visit to The Remarkable Sweet Shop is highly recommended, whatever age bracket you’re in. The river located behind the main street is nice in summer.
